The first thing May did when Jack and Marcus entered the opening was take in her captors’ positions. The museum curator, Spencer, was kneeling in front of it, watching the two men disappear. He would be easy to subdue, possibly kill.

But not the other one.

Theo, the one who had treated May as a piñata, smartly stood farther back. He also had his rifle in his hands, whereas Spencer had his slung around his back. The only way this would work was if she could get the man’s sidearm unholstered before being shot in the back with a Taser round.

May removed her helmet and set it on the altar.

Gemma stepped up next to her, also removing her helmet. She placed it next to May’s and leaned in close. “Don’t,” she whispered.

May flashed her rage-filled eyes to the Italian. “Don’t do what?”

Gemma tipped her chin toward Spencer. “Whatever you’re thinking of doing.”

She glanced over her shoulder, seeing that Theo hadn’t moved closer…yet. May was about to make her move, but she was stopped.

“Trust Jack,” Gemma said softly. Then she reached out and took May’s hand. “Please.”

May looked at her and saw fear in her eyes.

Dammit.

This was what Jack had asked her not to do anymore. May had been seconds away from risking her life—Gemma’s too—to “win the day.” Gemma’s viewpoint was much different from May’s warped perspective. Risking her life was a part of the job in May’s eyes, but she wasn’t the only one in danger here. Even Jack’s life was in the balance if she failed to take down Spencer and acquire his gun.

May didn’t like it, but she understood, loud and clear. She gave Gemma a subtle nod, and relaxed her tense shoulders.

“Smart move.” The voice came from behind the two women. They turned to find Theo aiming his rifle at May. “Your posture betrays you.”

“Does it?” May asked.

She seamlessly, effortlessly switched from hardened operative to seductive temptress. May turned, softening her facial expression, narrowing her eyes on him. Then she gave him the slightest of smiles. May turned her attention to Gemma next, lifting a hand and caressing the side of the Italian’s face. May bit her lip, and added eagerness to her eyes.

“Uh, what are you doing?” Gemma asked, face blanking with the unease she was obviously feeling.

She leaned in close to Gemma. “Just go with it.” Only when their lips were inches apart, did she snap her attention back to Theo. “How about now? Do you still believe I’m only thinking of the quickest way to kill you and your friend?” May stood tall. “When you think you know something, it might be safer to assume you don’t know anything at all.”

She turned away from Theo, flashing a grin at Gemma as she did. Gemma was still lost in the act May had just flawlessly performed.

Gemma blinked out of her stupor. “How long did it take you to perfect that?”

“That?” May asked, chuckling. “That was easy.” She winked. “Men are easy. Now, doing that, while also
